Samsung Gear 360 vs GoPro Fusion

If you are considering getting a new 360 camera, you should be aware that there are many models out there to choose from. We have brought you a comparison between the Samsung Gear 360 and GoPro Fusion models, in order to get a clearer idea of their similarities and of course, their differences.

Common features

These 2 camera models share a few traits that we’ll just mention here without going too deep into details:

  • The lack of a touch screen
  • Both are weather sealed
  • These cameras feature a continuous autofocus for movie recording
  • They include a CMOS sensor
  • Neither camera has a built in or zoom microphone
  • Both feature 2 lenses

There are a few other features that both camera have in common, but their specs are quite different, so we’ll talk more about those in the next section of this presentation.

The differences

The Gear 360 and Gopro might have some things in common, but also many differences. Let’s see what sets them apart, below!

Their appearance

At first look, the 2 cameras are designed differently, with the GoPro Fusion sporting a rugged, yet minimalistic design while the Gear 360 is elongated and slim, resembling a robot. When it comes to weight, the Gear 360 is slightly lighter than the GoPro fusion: it weighs 130 grams while the GoPro weighs 220 grams. GoPro Fusion measures 74 x 75 x 40mm while the other model’s dimensions are 100.6 x 46.3 x 45.1mm.


Hen it comes to design, the Gopro also looks thicker than other 360 cameras. The Gear can be a good choice for filming with just one hand due to its curved design. Unlike the Samsung model, the Fusion features a power button on front of the camera, which helps with viewing information faster.

Water resistance

If you drop most cameras in water, they’re highly likely to break and this is true for the Gear 360 too. The other model however, is water resistant for up to 5 meters.


The Go Pro Fusion also has a higher still resolution, 18 mp, when compared to the other model with a resolution of only 15 mp. GoPro Fusion has a resolution of 5.2k, which is bigger than the Gear’s 4k. Its images are sharper when compared to the other camera that has softer images. The Gopro also includes the OverCapture feature which enables you to extract HD films from the footage.

Smartphone application

Both cameras use a companion smartphone app that works well, but the Gear 360 has more issues when connected to an Iphone than the Gopro. Keep in mind you may need to restart your Wi-Fi a few times before seeing it work, but this is an improvement from the previous model that was only compatible with Samsung phones. Up to now, the Gear is not compatible with other Android devices. The GoPro provides its free software, GoPro Fusion studio, which can be used along with the companion app.


The Samsung camera features a base tripod socket, and you can switch between camera modes by using the LCD screen. The Fusion has its own mounting system you can use that was designed specifically for it, a feature not many other cameras have. The tripod can be used to attach the other GoPro accessories.

Recording features

The camera features various modes such as Video, Photo, Time lapse, Video looping and Landscape HDR.  The Fusion includes some other features that GoPro lacks, like the QuickCapture and Photo buttons that allow recording even when the camera is off when pressed once. It also includes a voice command option that you can use to begin or end recordings, or add Highlight Tags that help you find a particular moment whenever needed.


GoPro Fusion’s battery life is quoted at 75 minutes, while the Gear 360’s battery can last up to 130 minutes. The Gopro Fusion uses a removable battery and comes with a USB-C cable, however it does not include a wall charger. Even so, it offers more flexibility than the Samsung Gear that has non-removable batteries.

Memory cards

When it comes to memory cards, the Samsung Gear uses a microSD while the other needs two matched microSD cards, which can make things more inconvenient when transferring images to a computer.

While the OverCapture tool that GoPro features is useful for mobile use, the file sizes you will get are still quite big. However, the camera is superior to the Gear model that only provides a 24 p frame rate and has equally big file sizes. One disadvantage of the GoPro is that it gets too warm when recording.

Live streaming

These 2 models are different when it comes to live streaming: while the Fusion offers a smooth experience, the Gear is not supported on all platforms which could pose issues for some users. Additionally, it only streams in 2K.


Samsung Gear does not provide any stabilization options, while the Gopro has a great 6 axis software stabilization. The video abilities of the Gear 360 are quite good and comparable to those of the higher end cameras despite being a handheld device. However, the photo quality is poorer and the image often looks blurry when compared to the sharp images of the GoPro which require no further stabilization.


One of the features that makes the Gopro camera rank higher is the spatial audio option, which makes the experience more interesting when using a VR headset.

Last thoughts

When comparing these 2 cameras, the GoPro Fusion is clearly the more superior choice. While the Samsung Gear 360 looks cute, is easy to use, and also a lot more affordable, it doesn’t come with the modern features that GoPro offers. Gopro Fusion could pose some issues to beginners when it comes to video editing, due to some of its features not being user friendly.
