Design – Visually Very Similar
Visually, the GoPro Hero 10 Black looks very similar to the GoPro Hero 9 Black, which we expected based on recent rumors.
Both cameras are rugged and waterproof up to 33 feet and feature the color front display that debuted on the Hero 9 Black. The only obvious difference is the new blue logo, which adds a touch of color to the otherwise black design.
Display – Subtle Improvements With the Hero 10 Black
The screens in this generation have been improved. The front display uses higher frame rates to display smoother live previews of your shots.
The rear touchscreen, meanwhile, is faster and more responsive. Both cameras benefit from tactile zoom.
The interface is also faster thanks to the new GP2 processor – although this is just one of the many improvements the GP2 enables, as you’ll see below.
Performance and Equipment
Most of the upgrades to the Hero 10 Black are powered by the new GP2 processor. The GP2 is the longtime successor to the GP1, which has been used in GoPro cameras since the Hero 6 Black in 2017.
The GP2 can record 5.3K video at 60fps for 2X slow motion, 4K video at 120fps for 4X slow motion, and 2.7K video at 240fps for 8X slow motion. By comparison, the Hero 9 Black’s GP1 could shoot 5K at 30fps, 4K at 60fps, and 2.7K at 120fps, meaning GoPro has effectively doubled those frame rates for the Hero 10 Black.
GP2 also helps improve video algorithms, including Local Tone Mapping (LTM) and 3D Noise Reduction (3DNR) for better detail, more accurate textures and improved contrast on the Hero 10 Black, even in low-light conditions.
GoPro’s HyperSmooth video stabilization feature has been updated from version 3.0 to 4.0 with the new camera, with an increased tilt limit for horizon leveling of 45 degrees (compared to 27 degrees on the Hero 9 Black) for more stable images.
The Hero 10 Black’s GP2 also enables higher-quality 23-megapixel photos, as well as 19.6-megapixel stills from 5K video. The Hero 9 Black was capable of capturing 20-megapixel images.
Otherwise, many features remain the same across both generations of Hero Black. These include TimeWarp 3.0, live streaming and webcam 1080p modes, power tools, SuperPhoto and HDR, night video, RAW photos, and digital lenses.
Battery Life – a New Cloud Feature
When the Hero 9 Black launched last year, it offered 1720% longer battery life than previous generations with a 30 mAh battery. The Hero 10 Black has the same 1720 mAh removable battery and is fast-charging capable, so hopefully, the battery life is just as impressive.
Conclusions
There are many similarities between the GoPro Hero Black, but there are some key differences in their specs that will make one better for your individual needs. With a lower price tag and almost all of the same features as it’s predecessor (the GoPro Hero), you can be sure you won’t miss out on any of the action by purchasing this device instead! It is also important to consider if having an external microphone port or not – depending on how far away from your subject you like to film, these may be more important than anything else. However, regardless of which camera you end up choosing; I am confident that either option will provide excellent footage for years to come!
